There are a couple of excellent kitty guides out there already and I'm not going to duplicate the efforts of better kitties, I'm going to refer you to them and then give you a comparison of a couple move suggesters I have used and some Power Auras exports/macros (I posted both previously but without explanation, so I'm going to give a little more detail on them today).

DPS Guides
Alaron at The Fluid Druid (my favorite kitty blog - if you want to feral and you aren't following him, you should really fix that) has posted an excellent guide to feral dps that will tell you pretty much everything you need to know - talents, glyphs, etc.
Mihir's guide is also excellent and worth taking a look at. While they both cover mostly the same information, the format is slightly different so you may find one more useful to you than the other.

Gear
Again, Alaron has us covered with his Cataclysm Gear Wishlist - if you're still leveling or starting to run heroics, this is a great reference. I had it open in my second monitor at all times while I was leveling/gearing Gali so I knew exactly which reps/instances/quests to focus on. He's also posted a Cataclysm faction analysis detailing which factions to focus on for kitty gear/enchants.

Addons
Of course, this is going to be my main focus; as you may have noticed, I am somewhat obsessed with addons and I've tried more than a few to help me with kitty dps (I honestly do NOT recommend trying to do it without addons - the rotation is really that complex and relies so much on keeping up a lot of debuffs/buffs that without at least some timer addons you're going to really struggle with it I think. But maybe you're more awesome than I am and don't need addons in which case I don't know why you're here reading my blog :P)

Timers:

NeedToKnow is very awesome in that it's extremely simple - you create your own timers for the things you specifically want to track and that is it.

DoTimer is a fairly popular timer addon, and I used it to good effect on my warlock at the beginning of Wrath but eventually stopped using it in favor of Power Auras/Raven.

Raven is a fairly complex timer mod that tracks buffs, debuffs, cooldowns, etc, with lots of options for what and how to display things. One of the features it has that I ADORE is the notifications - individual modules that you can plugin for each class to help keep track of your spell priorities/rotation, so you can actually use it as a kind of move suggester. I'm using Ovale for that on my druid but I'm using Raven for my warlock because I think Raven works better for cooldown based rotations. The plugins are mostly here, though you can also set up your own notifications (and modify these if they don't quite work for you - I had to adjust my warlock ones slightly to account for my own latency/reaction time).

Power Auras - my love of this addon is well documented. It works great for custom timers in addition to everything else it does. I will go into more detail on my kitty exports later on in this post.

Move suggesters:
I have used several different ones over the last couple of years and they've all been very helpful, though you cannot be successful if you slavishly follow them - they are suggesters, emphasis on suggest.

Ovale is what I'm currently using. It uses a scripting system to inform it - you do not want to use the prepackaged script however. You can try writing your own if you're so inclined, but I'm using Leafkiller's script. Murloc Parliament (another awesome blog for general WoW stuff and addons) has an excellent guide to setting up Ovale.

Feral By Night was what I used for a long time. I can't currently recommend it, however, as it hasn't been updated for Cataclysm. I hear that there are plans to get it up to date so maybe it'll be worth checking out when it is updated. My main issue with it was that it included a lot of extras (proc monitor, energy monitor, etc) that I didn't need, so my first step in setting it up was to turn all that stuff off. The configuration options are also fairly complex and a little clunky, though if you really don't like scripting, it might be better for you than Ovale. The other thing that makes it less useful to me than Ovale is that it doesn't link to my action bars - Ovale is set to show my binding text and range indicators (so the numbers turn red when I'm out of range) which means that I don't need to look at my action bars for that info.

FBNLite started out as a pared down clone of Feral By Night, it's a much more basic move suggester. I don't know how up to date it is in terms of priorities (which have definitely changed since Wrath with the heavier emphasis on bleeds now) however.

Macros:

Most of my macros put my bear and cat abilities on the same button - it simplifies things for me.

Mangle:
As a troll it also pops the Berserking racial whenever it's available

#showtooltip [stance:1] Mangle(bear form); [stance:3] Mangle(cat form)
/startattack
/cast Berserking
/cast [stance:1] Mangle(bear form); [stance:3] Mangle(cat form)

Shred/Lacerate:
I've put Demoralizing Roar in this macro but I'm not actually happy with it there but I haven't decided what I want to do about it. I'll update when I've fixed this one

#showtooltip [stance:1] Lacerate; [stance:3] Shred
/startattack
/cast [stance:1] Lacerate; [stance:3] Shred
/cast [stance:1] Demoralizing Roar

Skull Bash:
Works for both cat and bear, shows whichever version is active and a "?" when not in either form.

#showtooltip
/cast [stance:1] Skull Bash(Bear Form); [stance:3] Skull Bash(Cat Form)

Spec swap macro:
This swaps my spec and gear depending on which spec I'm in. Modify for your own set names, obviously.

#showtooltip [spec:1] Bear form; [spec:2] Cat Form
/equipset [spec:1] Bear form; [spec:2] Cat form
/usetalents [spec:1] 2; [spec:2]1

Stampede:

A castsequence macro which gives me one button to mash to feral charge and then ravage the target. You may have to have Ravage visible separately on your bars to make this work however.

#showtooltip
/castsequence reset=10 Feral Charge(Cat Form), Ravage

I think you all know I changed Gali's race from tauren to troll as soon as it became available and that was purely for aesthetic reasons, though happily it is also slightly (very, very slightly) better for dps.
It turns out that Recount doesn't track interrupt data for Skull Bash (either cat or bear form versions). Apparently it's something to do with how it's tracked in the combat log (it doesn't trigger a SPELL_INTERRUPT event) - it's handled differently from almost all the other interrupts in the game for some reason. So really, it's not just a Recount problem - most other addons which track/announce interrupts will not count Skull Bash either. It still very much works as an interrupt though (and I use it to good effect!) so don't go thinking your ferals suck at interrupting. We're just sneakier about it.

My druid's 85, got there the Friday after launch. She's almost exalted with Therazane and Dragonmaw, which pleases me, then I can focus on Earthen Ring and eventually Ramkahen (do want camels! but gear comes first *sigh*).

I referred frequently to The Fluid Druid's gear list as I was leveling so I knew what I was specifically looking for. Not that it was really an issue as I planned on doing all of the new quests on her. I do highly recommend that guide (and his blog in general) for ferals - it's been very helpful!

I've done a few heroics though I've been frustrated by the lack of adequately geared guildies to run them with. I've alternated between queuing as a tank or dps - still learning the instances, once I feel more comfortable I'll probably be tanking more. I'm pretty happy with my threat/dps as bear, and mostly feel that my dps as kitty is appropriate to my gear level. Even better, I think my survivability as kitty is quite good (I've put points in Nurturing Instinct and Survival Instincts, both of which I highly recommend - Gali's build) and I've been enjoying having an interrupt finally. I definitely think the new instances are challenging but I also see things getting better as more people learn the fights and get the gear, so I don't think they're necessarily overtuned for the most part.

I also tanked my first Baradin Hold run yesterday - Argaloth is actually pretty easy and once everyone learned not to stand in the (green!) fire, we got him down without a hitch. The main challenge for me was watching Omen and balancing threat with my co-tank (a pally). If I kept up my full rotation I would pull him off her but if I eased off she would pull off of me. What seemed to work best was for me to pull first and pop Berserk, then I would keep my Lacerate stacks up while she was tanking him so I could pop Pulverize and Thrash after the switch. That seemed to give me enough of a boost to keep up with her but not overtake her either for the most part. I need to fix my macro for demoralizing roar though - I paired it with Lacerate in a lazy macro and I think I need to tweak it a little bit. It felt really good to kill a raid boss again, even if it's just the PvP guy.

Now I'm slowly working on leveling the priest next.

While in a late night guild run of H BRC, I made a Power Aura for tracking stacks of Evolution on the Corla fight, so here it is for you:
(Setting up a new trigger in MSBT)One of my new babies is a draenei hunter (level 53 already!!!) and I found myself wanting an audible alert for low focus. I knew I could probably do it in Power Auras but I thought it might be nice to set it up in MikScrollingBattleText instead, especially since I've started getting used to its low mana and health alerts. So I looked around and played with it a bit and this is what I figured out.

First, open up your MSBT options by typing /msbt and select Triggers. Click the "Add New Trigger" button - for my output message I put "Low Focus! (%a)" (basically copying the output for the low mana and health triggers).

Then open up the configuration for the new trigger by clicking the gear icon.

I specified hunter for the trigger class. I'm sure it's unnecessary but I like to be thorough.

When you first bring up the configurations interface for the trigger, the event will be blank. That's where we'll tell MSBT what we want to actually trigger the notification. So select the "Add Event" button and a new options interface will pop up.

The event we're looking for is "Power Change". Once you've selected that, you need to set your conditions. As you can see above, the conditions I selected were Power Type Is Equal To Focus, Unit ID Is Equal To You, and Threshold Is Less Than 20. (Maybe I should change it to 30 though... I'm still playing with it.)

I also added an exception:

That was basically so it wouldn't keep dinging at me as long as I'm at low focus. I only need to know once I hit the mark and then I can switch to steady shot or pop fervor or whatever.

I wanted an audible alert for it as well as the visual notification so I set that too. To access the font/sound options, you click the crossed tools rather than the gear next to it in the trigger list.

I used the low mana alert because I'm used to it. You can always create your own sound files and use those instead of the presets though.

And this is what the visual cue looks like:

The yellow text above my head tells me my focus is below my trigger condition mark, and what percentage it's at.

I only have a few slots left on my main's server and those are reserved for gobbos. So we picked another RP server to level Alliance toons on and this will be the home for our eventual worgen toons. My first worgen's going to be another druid, I think.

Anyway, as we were running around Stormwind avoiding elemental invasions and doing our leveling thing, my friend pointed out that the Stormwind Park was going away or at least was going to be drastically altered by the Shattering. So I decided that we had to have a picnic to say goodbye before it went.

The Pilgrim's Bounty holiday event provided the perfect means - a delicious Bountiful Feast and some drinks from The Blue Recluse provided the refreshments for my hunter and a few friends I <strike>browbeat</strike> persuaded to join me.
Goodbye, Stormwind Park. You will be missed.

For the most part, I'm excited about all the changes and new content but I'm sure that I will suffer the occasional nostalgic pang for the olden days.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00277930643027557008noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576807799844501264.post-7185939937914720292010-11-14T13:59:00.000-08:002010-11-23T15:53:23.476-08:00Deus Vox Encounters and Mik's Scrolling Battle Text: A Love StoryWorking on Lich King 25 today with my raid alliance and decided I needed to rearrange some of my ui elements to make it a bit easier to track defiles and such. I haven't done Lich King on 10 or 25 that much on my druid and I was finding that while my ui on her is fine for most fights, it was hurting more than it was helping on LK.

For boss mods, as I mentioned before, I use Deus Vox Encounters, which I love for its configurability. Today I found another reason to love it - it works with MikScrollingBattleText (which I admit to being a relative newcomer to - I felt like I was doing okay with the default floating combat text but enough people recommended MSBT to me that I figured I should give it a shot). After playing with it a bit (plenty of wipes and DCs today which gave me plenty of time to tweak things lol), I think I'm pretty happy with what I came up with.

A few months ago one of my hard drives died. I thought I had a backup on my external drive but I was unable to restore from it (tragedy!) and so I had to rebuild my UI from scratch. It's still not quite where I want it but it's coming along. The truth of the matter is, I'm pretty much constantly tweaking my UI and have been practically since I installed my first addon (I don't remember what it was called - I know it was an action bar mod, though) back in Vanilla.

All of the functionality I had before the drive died is back now and has been for a while, but some of the pretty stuff and more complicated stuff is still gone. I had SexyMap all fancied up with different looks for each character (specifically my druid, my priest, my warlock and my rogue all had their own looks). I'm starting to get it back gradually but slowly. I also had Macaroon! set up on my rogue in a fairly complex configuration and I haven't even touched it yet, though I really do want to get it set up again. (Macaroon is an awesome macro based action bar mod deserving of a post all to itself, which I will get to once I have it working again for me.)

Of course, I went through the usual patch upheaval with 4.01, tweaking and updating things until everything was working again, but at this point I've been through this process so many times that it was relatively painless. I healed with the default raid frames for a few days while I waited for Grid to get working again. The new Blizz raid frames are a major improvement over the old ones but they still don't quite get there as far as what I want. But that's the thing - I really really love using UI mods and setting up my interface exactly to my specifications. If the default UI catered to my needs, then it would probably be much too complicated for the average user.

Anyway, here's a couple of screenshots of my addons folder (it takes two to see everything lol):

Obviously I'm a big fan of Power Auras Classic for tracking cooldowns, procs and so on. (I also use GTFO, which is designed to work with Power Auras - it yells at you when you stand in stuff, which is pretty awesome. When I'm doing my mad kitty deeps sometimes I get lost in my rotation so it helps to have that little bit of extra "hey, stupid, gtfo" yelling at me.)

Some sort of boss mod is pretty much mandatory. I know most people use DBM - I used to use BigWigs (plus LittleWigs for 5 mans) but then after reading an article about it on No Stock UI, I switched to Deus Vox Encounters. I like the customization options and the boss health bar display. It provides arrows for certain encounters (pointing you towards or away from things like Lord Marrowgar's Bone Spikes and Malleable Goo) which I really appreciated until I started using HudMap.

Speaking of which, HudMap is another addon I consider essential for raiding. What it does is create HUD (heads up display) showing where you are in relationship to everyone else in the raid. An optional feature adds an arrow pointing to your target (assuming you're targeting another raid member) - this is GOLDEN on encounters like BQL where you need to run to someone to bite them or something. (I'm a kitty so I like to bite things. XD) It has encounter specific indicators as well, so you can see on the hud range indicators for shock vortexes, blood bolt whirl and similar mechanics. As far as I'm concerned, there's no replacement for it as a range indicator - even without the specific encounter mechanics it still works much better than anything else for seeing where you are in relationship to your fellow raiders.

(Note: The release version has had some issues with encounter visualizations for some users - the fix for me was updating to the alpha version, which you can download here. If you're using the Curse client, you should be able to just change your preferences to install the alpha for it.)

If you're playing a class that can cleanse, Decursive makes it much easier, though it doesn't do anything you can't do with mouseover macros or something similar. The downside to Decursive is that it lends itself to mindless cleansing which is dangerous on encounters where you want to control when and where people get cleansed. (No, I've never cleansed Mutated Infection on my priest when I wasn't supposed to. Not ever. >.>)

oRA3 is handy, especially for raid leading - it tracks cooldowns, checks durability, etc. I was using oRA2 but it's no longer in active development. I still haven't really explored all the features of the new one but so far I'm liking it.

And obviously some sort of threat meter (not so necessary for healing but essential for dps and tanking) - Omen is pretty much the standard for it, though some people really like Skada (which dual purposes as both a threat meter as well as damage meter). I played with it for a bit but it didn't quite have the display options I was looking for.

For raid, frames, I am a HUGE fan of Grid - yes, it takes some work to get it configured (though the most recent updates have dramatically improved the configuration interface) but once you have it set up, it shows you what you need and nothing more. For healing, you will probably also want GridStatusHots (it works not only for druid HoTs, but also spells like Prayer of Mending, PW: Shield, Beacon of Light, etc). GridStatusRaidIcons is essential for raid leading, esp if you feel the need to know if people are actually attacking the designated target and helpful for healing when you're dealing with a specific effect that DBM or other boss mods use raid icons to indicate. I also like GridManaBars and all the extra indicators I can get - text, icon or otherwise but I don't think they're necessary to make effective use of Grid. Most of the relevant Grid plugins can be found here. I will make a post later on explaining my Grid setup - for now, BobTurkey has written an excellent post on setting up Grid that I highly recommend (as well as his followup post).

First, Conflagrate was being a major PitA, thanks to Blizz leaving in the detection for Shadowflame on it, so it would flash as usable when Shadowflame was on the target, even though it no longer works with Shadowflame. I found the blue post about it, and they were like "oh yeah, known issue, don't think we're fixing it". So in order to fix my Conflagrate aura, I had to make it link to Immolate, so it would only light up if Immolate was on the target. I figured I might as well set up my Immolate auras while I was at it, and I've got two - one just showing the timer, and another one to animate when it's time to recast it. With dot clipping removed, it's ideal to refresh most of your dots (except for BoA) between the penultimate and last tick, so my aura flashes at 2.25 seconds, which is about what I need based on Immolate's cast time and my own reactions. Since that varies with haste and skill, you may want to adjust it.

And again, since they're linked auras, I'm posting them as a set.

I've been playing with Holy on my priest and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I struggled a bit to set up a Power Aura for my Holy Word spells though, so I looked around a bit and after looking at some advice on the forums and on the Power Auras Wiki I managed to figure it out.

I'll explain the steps first in case you have the same problem I did and couldn't export the string - it requires linked Power Auras which have to exported/imported as a set, and when I tried to do that with the one posted on the wiki, it not only gave me a lua error, it also deleted my Power Auras (it turns out this is what happens when you export a string to a page that already has some)! (Fortunately I keep copies of my strings on Google docs so it was easily recovered.)

So first you make a Power Aura that detects your Chakra state. I actually already had one set up because I wanted to watch my timer for it. Originally I had just set it to Activation by Buff, Chakra but the advice I read suggested putting in all the potential Chakra states, so that's what I did.

The Chakra Power Aura string:
Version:4.4; icon:priest_icon_chakra_blue; buffname:Chakra: Heal/Chakra: Renew/Chakra: Prayer of Healing; x:-785; owntex:true; isResting:0; PowerType:0; size:0.21; y:275; timer.enabled:true; timer.Relative:RIGHT

Then I created identical Power Auras for each version of Holy Word (by creating one and then copying it and editing the text for each one). You have to put the ID# for the Chakra Power Aura in the second input box on this one (and that's the link you lose if you export the auras one by one instead of as a set).

This time I'm using text so I've written "Prayer of Mending" in the box near the top, underneath where I've ticked the "Text Aura" box.

The texture for the spell is kind of yellow so I made the text yellow too, because I like keeping some visual connection between them. I also chose to use the "Cloister Black" font for my text aura.

Back to my settings:

"My Spell Cooldown" is a new setting they added in the last major update. I'm using it instead of "Action Usable" because I found that the latter required me to have the spell on a bar somewhere and since I'm using Clique for casting on my healer, I don't need Prayer of Mending or Penance on my bar. I wrote "Prayer of Mending" in the text box (or "Penance"), "In Combat" is ticked because I don't need to track it out of combat and "Spec 2" (for my disc spec) is also ticked (Spec 1 is my shadow spec which I'm only using for the occasional solo quest and I don't need to track PoM in that spec).

It's also animated so it blinks at me a little bit when it's up:

This is what my ui looks like in a raid, with my Penance aura showing above my raid frames:
Here are the strings if you want to just import my auras:
(Note: these are the old strings, since this is copied from an older post. I'll post my new strings later - I'm not using the same auras on my priest any more anyway. Though they are for an older version of Power Auras, they should still work.)

It's fairly straightforward.

Set your "Activation by" to "Weapon Enchant". Leave stacks at ">=0".

For your mainhand, set it to "main/poison" (and "off/poison" for your offhand) - it will monitor if you have poisons on that weapon, regardless of type. You can specify poison type if you want to - perhaps for battlegrounds/pvp, you want to remember to use crippling/numbing poison instead or something (you can also make a separate aura to remind you in battlegrounds if you so desire). I selected "Invert" - this means it will only show when I don't have poisons on my weapon.

You may have noticed I've also circled something at the bottom of the image - this allows you to make your PA notification spec specific (more on this later, as I don't have dual spec on my rogue, but I do use this feature on my priest).

Note: If you select "Use own texture", you will have to apply poisons to your weapons, unequip and then re-equip them before the textures will show up. The texture will be that of the weapon, in the case of a weapon enchant, just like the way it displays as a buff icon. (I originally wrote this several months ago and I'm not sure it's still an issue with the current version.)

It's from an older version of Power Auras Classic but the options interface is mostly the same for the examples I give. The Power Auras Wiki is a great source of information and export strings for Power Auras.

Anyway, here's the first part of the tutorial.

Since Power Auras is one of my favorite addons and I heard people were having some problems configuring it, I thought I'd write up a little guide illustrating some of the things you can do with it.

I'll start with one of the simpler uses - monitoring your buffs.

First open the config/edit window with the slash command "/powa".

There are two different types of effects.

Character effects, which are specific to the character you edit them on, and global effects, which apply to all the characters on your account.

What I want to do is remember to rebuff myself with Mark of the Wild when it drops, so I'm going to make it a character effect.

So you start by clicking the "New" button to create a new effect, and this is what you get:

Starting at the top, I decide to leave the "Glow" effect on. This makes your texture look kind of translucent and I think I'd like that for this effect.

Next we want to work on the activation settings - determining the conditions under which the effect will appear. Since we're working on a buff indicator, we'll leave that as it is:

I'm a visual person, so I want the effect to use the spell texture, so I select "Use own texture"

Note! - The texture will not show up until the spell is cast. In this case, you'll need to cast it, click it off and perhaps recast it before the texture is recorded. It took me quite a bit of fiddling around to figure that out. So there are two ways I deal with this - either I check this option last, after everything else is set, using the default texture to figure out size, positioning, etc. or I click it right away, close the config window, cast the spell, click it off and see if the effect appears.

Next I need to tell it what buff I'm looking for. I want this to work for either Mark of the Wild or Gift of the Wild, so I just put Wild in the name place (hit return when you're done) This means that sometimes it gets confused with Wild Growth or some other buffs, but most of the time it does what I want it to. You can put a partial name or a full name or use part of the spell description if you want.

I only want this to show up when the buff drops off, so I select "Invert". Otherwise it would show the whole time the buff was up and I don't need that.
Everything else you can leave at the default settings. Spend some time tweaking the size and xy coordinates until it looks the way you want it to look. This is what I ended up with:
Power Auras can be used for a lot of different things and I will come back to you and show you a few more things you can do with it; for example, set timers for your buffs/debuffs, create notifications when you reach a certain number of combo points, amount health, mana, rage or energy, tell you when an ability is ready to use, when your target has a specific buff or debuff on it, etc.

Let me know if there's something specific you're interested in doing with it and I'll see what I can do to explain how to do it.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00277930643027557008noreply@blogger.com0
